UIBE’s School of International Relations Holds Seminar on Providing Doctoral Degree in Political Science

On August 25th, UIBE’s School of International Relations successfully held the “Professional Doctoral Program for Political Science at the University of International Business and Economics” conference. The conference invited nearly 30 experts and scholars from major universities and research institutes across the country, including 5 members of the Political Science Discipline Review Group of the State Council Academic Degree Committee and 7 Vice Presidents of the Chinese Society of Political Science. The conference similarly reunited heads of various higher learning institutions in China. Professor Wang Jiaqiong, the president of UIBE, Professor Wang Qiang, Vice President of the university, and Vice President Cai Yongming attended the meeting. President Wang Jiaqiong delivered the opening speech. President Wang briefed the guests on the academic discipline construction in UIBE and manifested his hope that the experts will provide valuable and constructive opinions for the construction of doctoral programs in Political Science at the University and continue to support the future discipline construction and academic exchanges.


Professor Dai Changzheng, Dean of the School of International Relations, delivered a report on the School and academic subject construction to the experts. Dean Dai introduced the Institute of International Relations in terms of discipline development orientation, discipline layout planning, faculty, talent development, scientific research, social service and internationalization, cultural heritage and innovation, “innovation-driven” and “high-end leading” strategies. The School announced its intention to invite experts to provide guidance and suggestions on the planning content and doctoral training program.

The experts confirmed the rapid development and the emergence of the political science discipline at UIBE’s School of International Relations in the past decade and discussed the prerequisites for granting the university the right to conduct a 1st Class Doctoral Programme. The discussion continued on of the discipline consolidation, while putting forward pertinent opinions and suggestions. The Director of the Political Science Discipline Review Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, Professor Wang Puzhen, Peking University, Deputy Director of the Political Science Discipline Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, Professor Chen Yue, Renmin University of China, Professor Qin Yaqing, President of the China Foreign Affairs University, and Member of the Political Science Discipline Review Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council Professor Zhu Guanglei, Vice President of Nankai University, Vice President of the Chinese Political Society, Professor Zhou Guanghui, Jilin University and other experts pointed out that the construction of the discipline of Political Science at the University of International Trade and Economics should focus on the needs of national revival, exert its existing advantages to cultivate the faculty and teaching methods and consolidate the academic research.


Vice President of the Chinese Political Society, Prof. Yang Haijun of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Member of the Political Science Discipline Review Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, Professor Wang Changjiang of the Central Party School, Professor Jia Qingguo, Dean of the School of International Relations, Peking University, Vice President of the Chinese Political Society, Political Science of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Prof. Fang Ning, Professor of the Political Science Discipline Review Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, Professor Ma Depu, Tianjin Normal University, member of the Political Science Discipline Review Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, and Professor Huang Jiashu of Renmin University of China all provided insightful remarks and advices to UIBE’s future discipline construction.


Vice President of the Chinese Political Society, Professor Zhou Ping of Yunnan University, Vice President of the Chinese Political Society, Professor Yang Guangbin, Dean of the School of International Studies, Renmin University of China, Professor Li Qiang, Director of the China Social Science Research and Research Center of Peking University, and Zhang Xianming, Dean of the School of Administration, Jilin University, Professor Zhang Xiaojin, Director of the Department of Political Science at Tsinghua University, Professor Su Changhe, Executive Dean of the School of International Relations and Public Affairs of Fudan University, Professor Guo Shuyong, Dean of the School of International Relations and Public Affairs of Shanghai International Studies University, and other experts has in-depth discussions on the construction of political science. The scholars concluded that discipline construction must carefully grasp the balance between exploring new directions in the field and consolidate the mainstream paradigms.


 Professor Liu Jianfei, Executive Dean of the International Strategy Institute of the Central Party School, Professor Jing Yuejin, Deputy Director of the Department of Political Science, Tsinghua University, Professor Chen Mingming, School of International Relations and Public Affairs, Fudan University, Professor Yang Yang, Dean of the School of Politics and Public Administration, China University of Political Science and Law, Tianjin Normal University Prof. Yan Dezhi, Dean of the School of Politics and Administration, and Prof. Fang Lei, Dean of the Qingdao Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences of Shandong University, pointed out the importance of communication and innovation among different disciplines, emphasizing the need to for interdisciplinary studies. Specific directions for interdisciplinary research have been provided.

This conference represented not only an in-depth exploration of the achievements and shortcomings of the discipline construction of Political Science, but similarly provided many inspiring suggestions and valuable experience-sharing for future discipline construction, scientific research and faculty cultivation.
